This powder adsorbs the cloudiness from water so that it settles to the bottom. Then you can strain it out with cloth (such as a bandana). It's used routinely in 3rd World Countries. OMG!!!

I bought this the first time and it worked on my water great so the second time it was out of stock and I had to buy a different kind. I will never make that mistake again. It was awful and still left my water yellow. The Proctor and gamble is the only one so far that I have ever used that is taken out all bacteria and chemical products and left safe great tasting drinking water.
