Size up. I'm an average 7.5 and found the shoe to be snug without socks. So I was going to size up to 8 but they were sold out, so I chanced the 8.5 and to my surprise, it was just right with socks (just regular ankle socks). There was more room in the toe box area which makes for longer wearability and comfort. So I definitely would size up-depending on how you like your sneakers to fit.
