The side panels offer optional placement locations for the crossbars which will allow you to adjust the height and width space between the bars. The bars can be closer together for smaller shoes. Great Shoe Rack for the price!
My husband bought this for me for Christmas and I absolutely love it! I have included a few pictures. My closet isn't that big, so I separated the racks and it worked like a charm!! It truly accommodates 50 pairs of shoes including boots also!

Setup was a little hard I had my fiancé help me but the shoe rack works great none of my shoes slip off! flip-flops, slippers, sneakers, boots all stay on rack without a problem. I have it half way full and it hasn't shown any weight problems. I highly recommend this its very nice, my mom loves it I plan to get her one for her birthday. I would recommend wearing gloves when connecting the poles they have a sand paper feel to them and its a little harsh on skin.
