Regis Philbin is known far and wide as a morning-TV host, beloved for his amiable manner. In fact, he started out as a pop vocalist, singing on record as far back as the 1960s. Obviously, Philbin's high profile from television didn't hurt his latter-day album sales any. There were enough Regis fans in America to put WHEN YOU'RE SMILING into the Billboard album charts in its first week of release.
The record is a straightforward affair, devoid of any cheesy tie-ins with Philbin's TV persona. Essentially, the album consists of Philbin tackling a dozen standards, backed by a small jazz combo and string orchestra. The songs will be familiar to anyone with even a passing knowledge of the Great American Songbook, and Philbin delivers them with the same unpretentious likability that endeared him to millions of television viewers. While Regis is obviously no Sinatra (who is?), WHEN YOU'RE SMILING is no William Shatner-esque novelty affair either. In fact, a continuity with Philbin's initial musical aspirations is achieved via the inclusion of "Pennies from Heaven," a tune that was also present (in a different version) on 1968's IT'S TIME FOR REGIS!, Philbin's very first album.
