The size of the party hats are really meant for kids, although I was really hoping it would be large enough that an adult would not look like a giant with a tiny cone on his head. You do not really need to trim your paper to the size required if it is too big because you are cutting off the excess paper anyway. Just make sure you have enough to cover the size of what is being asked. I used 12x12 scrapbook paper, even if it asked for 10x10 or 6x6. When making the party hat, the excess paper looked like you could use it as a tiara. I have not tried to make anything else yet, but the tool is extremely easy to use. Just make sure the guides are pushed down or your paper may slip when cutting. Making the party hat with a nice point; not so easy, but then again, I was using scrapbook paper, which is probably thicker than what you should use.
