Yuzen washi is a type of Japanese paper featuring intricate patterns inspired by Yuzen dyeing techniques. The term "Yuzen" traces its origins back to the Edo period (1603–1868). At that time, the ruling shogunate implemented a strict sumptuary law called "Shashikinshirei," which prohibited extravagant decorations such as gold and silver embroidery on kimonos. In response, artisans developed the Yuzen dyeing method as a way to incorporate detailed, colorful patterns within the regulations.
