Medication Usefulness

Trimeprazine with prednisolone is used to treat itching associated with allergies in dogs and cats; it may also be useful as a cough suppressant. The FDA (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) has approved this drug combination for use in dogs to treat itching or cough. The FDA does allow veterinarians to prescribe and use products containing this drug in different species or for other conditions in certain situations. You and your veterinarian can discuss why this drug is the most appropriate choice.

Storage Instructions

Store this medication in the original prescription bottle or an approved dosage reminder container (ie, pill minder) at room temperature.
If your veterinarian or pharmacist has made (compounded) a special formulation for your animal, follow the storage recommendations and expiration date for the product.
Keep away from children and other animals.

Dosage

The same dosage schedule may be followed for both antipruritic and antitussive therapy. Up to 10 lb 1/2 tablet, twice daily 11–20 lb 1 tablet, twice daily 21–40 lb 2 tablets, twice daily Over 40 lb 3 tablets, twice daily After 4 days, reduce dosage to 1/2 of the initial dose or to an amount just sufficient to maintain remission of symptoms. Individual animal response will vary and dosage should be adjusted until proper response is obtained.

Instructions

Read and follow the prescription label carefully. Give the exact amount prescribed and only as often as directed. This medication is often given with food to reduce the potential for stomach upset. Due to the side effects of this medication, always ensure that your pet has access to fresh water and is allowed to go to the bathroom more frequently. Give this medication for as long as your veterinarian directs. Do not skip doses or stop giving the medication without consulting your veterinarian. Baseline blood work is recommended to assess your pet's general health before starting this drug. Periodic blood work to monitor its effects on the body is also advised if long-term therapy is necessary. Dose adjustments may be made based upon these results and an assessment of how your dog or cat is responding clinically. Call ahead for refills. Ideally, give this medication at the same time(s) daily.

Contact your veterinarian immediately if your pet receives more than the prescribed amount. This medication can affect the gastrointestinal system causing vomiting and diarrhea. These side effects may be reduced by giving this medication with food. This medication can cause an increase in thirst, urination, and appetite. This medication can cause muscle tremors, rigidity, and restlessness. This medication can cause weight gain, panting, dull hair coat, muscle wasting, and behaviour changes. This medication can affect the immune system at high doses causing an increased susceptibility to infections and delayed wound healing. This medication can cause the development of diabetes or Cushing's disease when given long term. If these symptoms persist or you notice anything else unusual, contact your veterinarian. Trimeprazine tartrate + prednisolone should be stored in a childproof container in a cool, dry place at room temperature away from heat and direct sunlight. Keep this and all medication out of reach of children and pets. Call your physician immediately if you accidentally take this product.
