Great until it's not

Our Trinsic faucet has been a delight until recently when the retractable head quit nesting with the spout. I stuck my finger in and all kinds of brown crumbly junk started coming out. Pieces of pieces. Reading this thread makes me think maybe I just leave it alone and keep my fingers out of it, but for an expensive faucet to disintegrate like this is really disappointing.
