I love to feed song birds. However, the doves (rats with wings) in our area were over powering my feeders. They can't touch the food with these feeders. I love it.

Squirrels Are Puzzled

We have had this feeder now for about 4 years. Like another reviewer, I agree that the birds did not come near it because the wire was too small and they were hesitant to get through there to the ports and eat. Not even the chickeadees. So I modified it. I cut out some of the wire around just the perches. Now small birds land all the time and they will actually wander around inside once they're in there. I also drilled holes in the bottom so that water would drain through any seed that dropped. Without that drainage, seeds will sprout & mold. It is very well constructed tho - all metal. Believe me those squirrels have probably chipped a tooth or 2 trying to chew through it. We have it as a pole mount and squirrels still do hang on the sides and try to get in there. If you have it pole mounted, watch the lid because the squirrels can easily loosen it and almost climb in that tube and feast. We rigged a little bungy thing out of heavy florist wire to go over the top to anchor it. They've tried to chew through that and have not succeeded....yet. The biggest solution to no squirrels on this feeder has been to switch the feeding program to straight safflower seed. The birds absolutely love it and it has discouraged the squirrels. They still get on the feeder but they don't hang out as long. With those areas cut out and a change in seed, we get lots of chickadees and finches. Too small, tho, for the lovely cardinals - nowhere to perch. All in all it has very sturdy construction and has been able to withstand 4 harsh Wisconsin winters...as well as the Squirrel Test. But I would recommend the manufacturer make those perch areas a little more bird friendly so they will actually land and eat. Maybe even make the perches longer so cardinals can land and at least eat from the ports. Thanks Walmart for offering a nice product at a very fair price.
