  • Robert Johnson's recordings were made in the 1930s, but they did not become widely known until the 1960s, and did not achieve mass popularity until the 1990s, with the release of Columbia/Legacy's box set The Complete Recordings. Due to the age of the recordings, however, they are in the public domain in Europe, so any record label can simply copy an existing disc and put out its own version. Hence, there have been many cheap competing collections of Johnson's recordings put out on European CDs, and this is another one. The difference here is that, while the Columbia/Legacy set stretches out to two CDs by including 12 alternate takes, somebody at Prism Leisure realized that the original 29 master takes actually fit onto one disc, and that's what you get here. So, if you don't need extensive annotations or alternate takes, and you're looking for a bargain, you can have Johnson's complete repertoire right here. (Although, nominally speaking, this European release was not for sale in the U.S., where it would compete illegally with Columbia/Legacy's still-in-copyright American product, in practice it was available easily at an inexpensive price upon release. ) ~ William Ruhlmann, Rovi
