Turn your old clothes or sneakers into something new with Rit dye, an easy-to-use all-purpose dye. Like all Rit dyes, purple can dye most fabrics and wood, paper and nylon-based plastics and it is great on washable fabrics. On wood, you can create a whole new piece. You can even mix different colored dyes to create one-of-kind items. Create more than 500 custom dyes by mixing them with other colors.

Instructions

Preparation: Pre-wash fabric to remove any finishes or stains. For every pound of dry fabric (i.e. 2 adult large t-shirts), use 1/2 bottle (4 ozs.) of dye with 3 gallons of the hottest water safe for fabric. Dye bath must have enough water for fabric to move freely. To achieve a darker or more intense color, double dye quantity If dyeing to a lighter or different color, use Rit Color Remover before dyeing to reduce existing color in most fabrics. Do not use bleach to remove color. Directions: Shake well before using. Wear rubber gloves. Add hot water to a plastic bucket, stainless steel sink or stainless steel pot. Ideally, water temperature should be 140 degrees F or greater. Add 1 teaspoon of liquid dish detergent. For best results, add 1 cup of salt to dye bath for cotton, rayon, or linen. Add 1 cup of vinegar to dye bath for nylon, silk or wool. Add dye. Mix well. Submerge unfolded wet fabric into dye bath. Stir consistently for 30 minutes or until desired color is achieved (up to 60 min.). Fabric will look darker when wet and prior to washing. Rinse with cool water until rinse water begins to run clear. Wash in warm water with mild detergent by hand or in your washing machine with an old towel. Use Rit Colorstay Dye Fixative immediately after dyeing cotton, linen, rayon or raime to maximize color retention. Tips: Dyeing in a washing machine is the most convenient method for dyeing large items. Can be used in top-loader, front-loader or HE machines. Not recommended for synthetic fibers (fabrics containing more than 35% polyester, acrylic or acetate). Instead, use Rit DyeMore Synthetic Fiber Dye. Not recommended for fabrics with a rubber backing or labeled Cold Water Wash or Dry Clean Only. May not be effective on bleach damaged fabrics. If in doubt, test dye a swatch first. Package color reflects approximate results when dyeing white or off-white 100% cotton.

This is the third time I have used this dye. It does well to color different fabrics. I used it to dye a bed ruffle, and two purses. I use one bottle for each item and I use my washing machine to get the dye distributed into the fabric. I let the fabric stay in the washer agitating for about 40 minutes. Then after the rinse cycle, I hang the item out to air dry. To get the dye out of the washer, I pour in 1 cup of bleach and let the washer cycle through on longest time.
