Comes right out of the box and lays right on top of the crossbar that may come with your umbrella. It recommends sand AND water, but I've found success and sturdiness with just water. The base does have some size to it, so expect for it to take up some space.

I even wrote the seller to ask what base to buy only to get the first page of the base instructions manual highlight ADDITIONAL pieces NOT included in the base kit. WHY WOULD YOU NOT JUST SELL THEM TOGETHER?! its a waste of time and if I'm spending this much on an umbrella, I don't want to spend more time getting additional parts and waiting. It also just feels like nickel and diming for what should be a higher end price point t. Beyond frustrating
