Brother 1034D 3 or 4 Thread Serger with Easy Lay-in Threading, White

This is my third serger. The first was a cheap one from JoAnn fabrics and I taught myself to use it. It was good for a first serger but didn't have differential feed and had only one foot and was very difficult to thread and keep threaded. The second was a Pfaff and I took classes at a sewing machine shop and purchased a workbook to go with it. It was good for a while but difficult to thread and change stitches. I had it for about ten years. This Brother 1034D came with three feet, has differential feed, and is really easy to thread and set up for different applications. I expect it to last for several years and will use it frequently. I sew for my grandkids and myself and do garment and home dec sewing. I make lots of fleece and flannel blankets and use the serger to hem them with wooly nylon thread. The hems are a breeze on this new serger.

I have been using other people's sergers for years and finally had a small budget to buy my own. I went back and forth do I buy a used high end one or a new one. I have three children, most of my projects are Halloween costumes, sung dresses, American Girl doll clothes, fleece winter gear and what not. I went with this and purchased the three year warranty just incase. I couldn't be more happy! As with all sergers you have to get the tension just right depending on the type and quality of thred you are using. You do have to remove a piece in the lower looper area in order to do a rolled hem but it's easy to remove and replace and so worth it because of the professional look a rolled hem gives you. The machine uses standard machine needles which is a bonus. The cover it comes with is not much better quality then a plastic grocery bag so you might want to invest in a better cover, or make one with your new amazing machine. I was concerned with quality at this price point but so far it is a great product. Brother is a well known brand and Jo-Ann's even sells this machine, just at a much higher price.
