Beautiful jobs completed

I can't tell  you when I bought my Minwax Polyshade, there's always some left in the can from a previous use, it's the only product I use!  It always goes on smooth and cleans up nicely and the furniture looks beautiful!

Blah to elegant

I've only used Classic Black, (on kitchen cabinets) which I am guessing must be the easiest color with which to get consistent results. I applied two coats over existing poly. The oak wood grain looks great with the black satin. (Adding crown molding and satin hardware also helped). I believe most disappointed users are not carefully following the recommended application instructions.

Not a good choice for me

Review Polyshade After using PolyShades all in one my choice is to strip the oak table and chairs again or trash them PolyShades was blotchy and uneven. Unfortunately, this all-in-one polyurethane stain cannot be adjusted the way regular stain can be. This stuff is impossible to apply without the finish looking as though a 5-year-old did it. It's globby, uneven and just plain awful to use. It's almost as though it clots. I've refinished many pieces over the years but nothing has failed like this project has. I spent well over 20 hours stripping and sanding (3 steps to 240). I used Minwax prep, and several good brushes for the poly before I switched to a cotton cloth application. I applied three light coats. Then four...sanding lightly between each with a 240-grit sandpaper and then tacking for dust. My hope was that this would even out with more applications. It didn't. Too bad because it was a beautiful piece. Now I wonder if it is even salvageable. Very disappointed in the product and would rate it less than one star if I could.

reply from Customer Support

Thank you for taking the time to review the Polyshades. We apologize you did not get the desired results when using this product for your project. Application of this product will require a steady and even application to the surface, and it is less forgiving than most general staining products. This is due to the fact that the colorants are encapsulated within the clear finish and not separate. The consistency of the color achieved will be directly related to evenness of the applied product. Unfortunately, if this product is applied unevenly across the surface, the finish can appear "streaky" and/or uneven. I apologize that you are having this experience. To reapply the Polyshades, you will want to first ensure that the existing coloring is even. Streaks in the first layer will continue to show through consecutive coatings, so it will be best to sand down the existing finish so that it is once again even. Using a 120 or 220 grit sandpaper should work well. Remove the sanding dust by wiping with 100% mineral spirits before reapplying the Polyshades. When using this product, try to apply each brush-load to the surface using the least amount of strokes as possible. The more you work this product on the surface, the greater your chances of it streaking. I would suggest practicing your application on a spare piece of wood first to ensure that you are confident in your application method before attempting this on your project again. Work in smaller, manageable sections and try to move quickly before the product has a chance to dry. I would suggest resisting the urge to "touch up" any areas, as this can result in the colorants balling up or clumping, or a noticeable brush mark. Maintain a wet-edge as suggested on the label (not brushing into product that has begun to dry) and you should have pleasing results.
