The Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner was the perfect solution for a hand rail using new pine wood. I first tried a pine wood sample with Minwax "English Chestnut" stain. The soft wood instantly absorbed the stain producing an uneven spotty black. This problem was solved by using Minwax Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner that changed the stain color to the correct warm brown finish. The best part was how easy it was to apply with a rag and then only wait 5-15 minutes before wiping with a clean cloth.

This pre-stain soaked in quickly and was low odor. Get more than you think you will need. I always use more than I plan on. It did make a nice difference in the final dark stain compared to another project I did without it.
