Romanian sculptor, painter, and photographer Constantine Brancusi remains one of the most revered artists of the twentieth century, and his works are included among the most prestigious collections around the world. Brancusi made his career in France, though he studied in Bucharest, Milan, and Paris while honing his skills and using traditional Romanian folk art as an influence paired with modern masters. This photograph of one of his most iconic pieces, The Kiss, demonstrates his traditional style and minimal aesthetic as well as his proto-cubist and non-literary representation. Brancusi became popular in the United States in the early nineteenth century, and a version of this work is on display in the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
