The wood was either a cheap particle board laminate or extremely poor quality: plastic screw inserts were placed to the drill holes to keep fit, and those were too loose to screw in without pulling a half-fit screw out %26 gluing the screw holder back in like they should have. Those screws were so poorly made that I needed to Dremel out and put wood epoxy over the holes for ones where the necks snapped off: not even after excess torque, they didn't even get the chance to get more than 2/3 inserted, let alone tight enough to snap (and while a variety of wood screws were supplied, most are 1", and longer than the thickness of a normal desk, making them dubious to even include, and the shoddy short ones are also in too short of a supply to use across all 12 holes if they didn't snap, so just buy a bag of better 1/2" wood screws if you're going for this despite the warnings here...plus a piece of wood %26 a drill while you're at it realistically). It's not like $60 is skimping on the appropriate range of costs sufficing to make that of commiserate quality for the price. The railings splayed out under very little pressure as well (even just its weight), making it very hard to gauge drill hole locations relative to one another accurately (which you will likely have to do to install one on a desk not made just for that shelf). Finally installed it %26 can use it, so not a 1-star simply because ultimately, I do use it for its intended function, making it technically adequate, and it shipped fine %26 quickly. With the shoddy product, communication is a non-factor: it isn't like a return would match shipping costs to do more than incur a deeper mutual loss to help, so not bothering.
