Big Max produces large, nearly-round pumpkins that are 18" in diameter and average 100 pounds. An eye-catching variety with its lightly rough pinkish-orange skin and bright yellowish-orange 4" thick flesh. The flesh is also great for canning and freezing and matures in 120 days. Early pumpkins, actually a form of squash, come from early Native American gardens. Native Americans grew these vegetables as part of the "three sisters" group comprised of beans, corn, and squash, since they provide mutual benefits. Pumpkins and squash became a valuable food source for the settlers of the New World. Now, people commonly buy pumpkin seeds for both food and decoration.
