I'm currently not using a rug pad and the back of the rug is not rough at all so no worries about it scratching floor if you choose not to use a pad underneath. Rug is beautiful in person.

    Very nice rug. Much better than the popular brand of washable rug that I threw in the trash. This is more substantial, lays flat. I used a pad under but you could get away without one. I havent washed it yet but I am optimistic. Looks beautiful too.
