Even even when our kids were little 30 years ago. We had the same issue. Otherwise, the kids sit way too close to the writer. And definitely has no. So we customize the brackets

I followed the instructions and, with minor adjustments, mounted it on my daughter's vintage (circa 1963) Roadmaster "Westpoint" that I restored some time ago (see attached pictures).
