There are no pull-tabs, no switches and everything is automatic. At the end of its life, the unit will chirp, which indicates that it's in need of a replacement. Users can use a simple tool like a screwdriver to deactivate the unit, stopping the low-battery chirp and making it safe for disposal. The sealed-in board-mounted battery will power the i9010 unit for its complete 10 year life. No replacement battery will ever be needed. Does the job at a good price
Was originally looking at combination smoke & CO detectors, but found out that while smoke detectors should be changed out every 10 years, CO detectors should be changed out every 5 years. Also, recommended placement of each is different, so purchasing separately made more sense. I bought separate CO detector (First Alert CO605 plug-in model with battery backup)...great price too.
