I have a 23 hp vanguard surface drive mud motor. Occasionally when new and constantly now (2 years old) I have had problems with the motor stalling out, especially if under a load. I had 2 different mechanics look at it and couldn’t fix/figure out the problem. Also talked to another who is a Briggs dealer as well as a dealer for my particular brand of surface drive (Go Devil). He had no idea what was causing the problem and started the same old “needs a carburetor kit” BS. I knew better because I had already spent about $300 on 2 of those jobs with no results. I find it hard to believe that 3 guys had no idea what the problem was because after going to the web and reading some forums, it seams this problem is very common. Apparently when this motor is used for this application, it is very common for the stock diaphragm fuel pump to be inadequate to maintain fuel supply. Several of the forum post suggested replacing the diaphragm pump or replace with an electric fuel pump. After reading these post, the next time out, I just tried constantly squeezing the fuel primer bulb. The motor ran fine as long as I kelp squeezing that bulb. The motor was simply starving for fuel, especially when under a load or low rpm. I was researching electric fuel pumps and happened to run in to a fellow duck hunter on the water one day. While talking to him I noticed one of your pumps mounted on the transom of his duck boat. Note - he had the same motor as me and had the same issues. He said your fuel pump solved his problem and highly recommended it. I order one plus a spare and he was right!!!!!! My problem solved. Anyone having similar issues, get you one of these. Note - I did NOT bypass the stock diaphragm pump, just put this electric pump between the primer bulb and the existing stock diaphragm pump. To any manufacturers using similar motors in similar application, that may read this, it may be wise to make this pump standard on your product. It could save a lot of grief with your customers.
