Berlin, 1831. Cholera has reached the city. Three women’s destinies will cross paths at Charité, the oldest hospital in Berlin.
Panic takes over Berlin when the body of a sailor victim of cholera is discovered. While Dr. Dieffenbach and his colleagues in Charité Hospital fight relentlessly to stop the epidemic, the most advanced hospital in Europe of that time will forever unite three very different women’s destinies.
While the doctors at Charité try to discover the illness’ origin and form of transmission, fight against infections, gangrene, ringworm and syphilis, three brave and struggling women immerse themselves in their own personal battles. Countess Ludovica, trapped in a loveless marriage with a hypochondriac; Martha, a midwife who strives to give her son a better future; and Elizabeth, a nurse who is passionate about medicine and in love with a young doctor.
“I have been a Ulrike Schweikert fan for a long time and I recommend The House of Charity, a splendid historical novel about three brave, strong, and passionate women whose destinies interconnect in the Charité Hospital at the beginning of the 19th century.” -Anne Jacobs, author of The Cloth Villa
