Not unlike his inspiration Claude Monet, Emile Claus revisited certain subjects more than once in differing conditions. The tree shown in this 1900 painting grew right near his home in Astene, near Ghent, and he painted it several times over more than 7 years. He called his little cottage "Villa Sunshine" and his work was energized by the natural setting. The way the light falls low and warm on the tree's trunk and the detail present in the branches, bark, and underbrush really combine Impressionism with Luminist and even Pictorialist qualities. The leaves are present mostly on the ground and the entire scene burns with fiery autumn tones. Invigorate your home or office with this cozy scene, reproduced in oil-on-canvas by our talented artists.
