After Wells View High's principal dies unexpectedly on campus, the future of the idyllic, serene school is thrust into uncertainty, and the heartbreaking task of finding a replacement falls to beloved English teacher Hannah Johnson. But, in trying to ensure stability after her friend's tragic passing, Hannah unwittingly ensnares the school in a convoluted, tedious selection process-one that begins to dominate every facet of daily life. To her utter astonishment, the rest of the staff aren't bothered at all by the needlessly complicated system but seem entirely mesmerized by the protracted event and the blissful possibilities it presents. Alienated from her co-workers in this new, strange reality, Hannah must deal with the resulting chaos alone. And, when two strong candidates emerge, the gulf between her and her colleagues only widens, as blind allegiances begin to tear the school apart. Ending the process, she's convinced, is the only way to return sanity to Wells View.
