The Tattoo Henna plant is one of the most fragrant flowers on earth. Widely cultivated in tropical countries but probably native to North Africa and Asia. It is widely naturalized in the West Indies and Mexico where it is known as "mignonette." Its leaves produce the henna or alhenna of the Arabs (cyprus of the ancients), a yellow/red die which is used in Egypt and elsewhere by women to color their nails, and by men to die their beards, and for other similar uses including horses manes and tails. It is known in the West Indies as "Egyptian privet", and sometimes as "reseda". It is the camphire of the authorized version of the Bible. It is best grown as a container plant, outside in the summer and indoors, indoors in the winter. With a sunny window it can be kept indoors year-round. Plus it can be easily trimmed to keep inbounds! In zones 9-11 it can be grown outdoors. The henna plant (Lawsonia inermis) is a small shrub, whose leaves are collected, dried and reduced to a powder all in the name of beauty. When mixed with a special liquid, like lemon juice, tea or coffee, the henna forms a paste with temporary dying powers. It stains the skin a beautiful red, ranging anywhere from deep burgundy, to bright orange, to burnt sienna. Henna has a distinct herbal scent; its stain lasts several weeksà  many believe the longer, the better. Recipes, patterns, and application techniques vary from woman to woman, from culture to culture; there are thousands of ways to tattoo with henna, making it a sincerely unique and individual means of communication.
