After their grandmother’s death, Emilia and Gregorio Ventura, somewhat helpless, set off on a trip to the US border in search of their father. With flashbacks between the present and the past, this novel exposes the two young siblings’ struggles against a violent reality, one far from the magical world in which they grew up sheltered by their paternal grandmother.

Certain of a hopeless future if they stay, the Ventura siblings begin their pilgrimage facing abuses by “coyotes” and by other migrants: men and women who, like them, are going through a journey that will force them to put their humanity to the test and to reinvent themselves. Luckily, Emilia and Gregorio make use of their grandmother's advice which helps them survive and confront their fears, thanks to a mysterious force that protects them.
