Speed is great but the reliability is not

The TP-Link 5GHz AC867 is a great product when it comes to its speed (when paired with a similar unit), distance and ease of use. The throughout is excellent and can handle massive network traffic even at long distances. I own many of these but in the last year I have had several fail. 2 of them appeared to fail because of rain / water intrusion. This unit is designed for outdoor use so failing during wet weather is a negative for reliability. I have resorted to putting coax tape (Soft rubber compound designed for waterproofing) around the seams on the ethernet port cover. Just makes it harder to get the cover off if you need access. I have had 2 others fail from what seemed to be nearby lightning strikes. Since these are POE powered, there is not a decent ground through the power delivery. I suppose you could ground the chassis. However, in most cases you might be mounting these off a roof and getting a ground wire to the unit is an additional problem for the installation. The lightning strikes were not direct - just vicinity. One unit was completely dead. The other forced the gigabit port to be capped at 100 mbps. Working with the support team, there was no way to fix the issue, and it had to be warranty swapped out. One thing to be careful is that the ethernet tabs that hold the ethernet cable in the port are flimsy. I have had these break when trying to remove ethernet cables which renders the port nearly useless if you can't trust the ethernet cable will stay in place. These are considered professional units, and they come with direct access to the service team and a 2-year warranty. So that is a plus. When these are working they are seamless and like putting up a long invisible ethernet cable. But I have to knock them because when a storm comes, I don't know if they are going to survive.

Less signal than my existing wifi. Waste of money.

Really a waste of money. This thing reviews well with so-called professionals, but it is inadequate. I bought it to get better signal in my workshop. However, the wifi signal this thing provides is even less than the network I'm trying to extend. I get a stronger signal out of my primary router/ap than I do this thing, and it's pointed directly at the workshop. Furthermore, my neighbhors' (yes, multiple neighbor wifi's) come through stronger than this thing does. Maybe it works better with two, but that should have been specified in the product description and on this website. Buyer beware.

reply from Supplier Response

Hi,

Thank you for your review. If you are attempting to achieve omni-directional WiFi extension or coverage, please note the CPE710 is not designed or advertised for this. The CPE710 is a highly directional outdoor WiFI transmission device, intended to send laser-like, long-range WiFi in a point-to-point configuration. The antenna beamwidth of the CPE710 is 9° (Azimuth) / 7° (Elevation). If you would prefer omni-directional outdoor WiFi coverage, we would suggest considering our EAP225-Outdoor. Thank you.
