This story picks up where book two (GDWD Southern Fried) left off, but three years later. Irah Bell and his son Jayden come under attack after Jayden tried to stop Nathaniel Cortez from manhandling a young woman, Bella. The woman is the cousin of Irah's illegitimated son, fifteen year-old Beau. She has a daughter Sophia, who happens to be Nathaniel's daughter. Nathaniel had raped her when she was sixteen. Angered by the fact that he was ordered to pay her child support, he pimps out Bella to get his money back.
Knowing that Judge Grayson Cortez will be putting out a hit on them, and that now Bella, Beau and his mother Cezelia are also in danger, Irah contacts Buck and Karen to ask them to hide them out for a while, so the FBI can go in and take down the judge.
Irah looks forward to going back to Kentucky. He wants Karen to get Conner to come back and visit so he can see his brother again. And he wants Conner to know his son. He also wants to prove to Jessie that he is over Karen. Buck doesn't like the fact that he will be coming back into their lives again, but feels obligated to help. It becomes an emotional roller coaster at times as Karen faces her hostilities over being used and made to feel responsible for his death. But, she learns to like Jessie. And now Saul has some serious competition when it come to Cindy.
Young Beau is quite talented. His mother has taught him the art of palm reading. But, he does have some psychic abilities of his own.
After Judge Cortez is arrested, Joel Derringer is ordered by the courts to defend him. He doesn't want to do it, but he really doesn't have a choice. The judge has already threatened his mother. Cortez tells Joel he hired a P I to look into Irah's background. He believes Irah is in fact Beau Warsknof the allegedly deceased FBI agent. He thinks Jessie is really Karen, and he also accuses Irah as being the Tourbillion and that Irah set him and his son up so he could fake his own death once again.
This leads Joel to Kentucky to try to find Karen and Buck to identify Irah as Beau. In turn, it leads Karen and Buck to New Orleans to encounter danger together as they work with the FBI to try to nail the judge along with many others.
