I cannot say enough good things about Author Katie Powner's stories! Fantastic, authentic, real, are just a few words that come to mind. A Flicker of Light is a beautiful story of family, grief, letting go, and living with a loved one with dementia. These beautifully flawed characters are so real, I really do want to go visit them in fictional Moose Creek, Montana! From Mitch, the cranky husband who lost the love of his life two years ago, to his daughter Bea who fled from home after her Mom's death to a college across the country, and her husband Jeremy, who come to live with Mitch for a season. The energetic neighbor Marge who brings over meals without fail, and is interested in Bea's dad Mitch. All are concerned about Mitch's parents Rand and Juniper Jensen with a family secret and June's memory fading. I love the way the story "Once upon a time, there was a man named Miner McGee" was woven into this book.
My favorite quote: "She'd spent a lot of time the past few weeks wishing for a different life. What if all those wishes for what could've been were keeping her from loving what was." A lesson for all of us, indeed.
Author Katie Powner is on my must-read author list. I am so delighted I discovered her last year with her fantastic debut novel "The Sowing Season".
I highly recommend A Flicker of Light for all who love an excellent story!
Thank you to the author and Bethany House for allowing me to read an early copy. All opinions are my own.
