Letters to read and cherish

This collection of letters maps the relationship of two of the most influential writers of the 20th century, starting from the beginnings of their romance in 1897 and only ending with Rilke's last word to Andreas-Salome, in Russian, from his death-bed in 1926: 'Farewell, my darling.' The German letters have been translated into lucid and graceful English by Edward Snow and Michael Winkler. For a good introduction to these two important figures, I recommend Cordula Kablitz-Post's 2016 film, 'Lou Andreas-Salome: The Audacity to Be Free (see photo).
