Carex pensylvanica, sometimes called Pennsylvania sedge or oak sedge, is a pleasing, yet fairly common sedge of mesic or dry woods. They make for a valuable lawn substitute, groundcover, or edging for a shade garden. They can also help with erosion control. These plants form large colonies from long strong rhizomes. Their foliage is a deep, bright green and these are semi-evergreen plants which usually grow to between 8 inches and 1 foot, with narrow glossy blades. In some cases they reach 16 inches tall with a 2 foot spread. In the early springtime, white or off-white spikelets are held above the leaves. In the wild, this plant occurs in partial sun or shade in well drained or dry acidic woodlands. For landscaping purposes, it makes an excellent groundcover or lawn substitute for a shade garden.
