On the Brink of Extinction
You probably agree with me in thinking that now or in the near future, the chance of a catastrophic asteroid impact on Earth is quite low. Asteroid hunters tend to agree. After all, they have a catalogue of big 'near-Earth' objects and none of them threatens our planet in the foreseeable future. However, any serious asteroid hunter will admit that a sizeable, unknown asteroid could strike Earth with little notice. With that in mind, ask yourself this: how bad could things get if a 4-mile wide asteroid hits Earth in this technology-dependent day and age?
The following story may signal things to come ...
Dramatic discovery of a 4-mile wide asteroid. Possibly on a collision course with Earth. Space agencies scramble to verify. Within days of the startling televised news, stunning confirmation of a direct hit in just four months' time. As worldwide chaos ensues, graduate students Millie and Seth prepare for the coming apocalypse, including the collapse of society's many infrastructures - healthcare, food production, water, energy, policing, and more. Like everyone else on the planet, they face an extended period of wildly chaotic weather events, near constant darkness, paltry global food production, massive government-sponsored hunts that push many species to the brink of extinction yet yield little food, the return of plague and other dreaded diseases, savage cannibalism, along with other natural and moral evils. Billions of people die of starvation or murder or by succumbing to the harsh elements. Through it all, Millie and Seth and others try their very best to survive in order to help shape society anew.
