My first exposure to hot glue guns was in a stage play where they were using them backstage to quickly fix costume problems. I bought one right away and for years have used it to do a zillion various fixes. This latest version is much nicer than my old one. It is more powerful and has automatic shut off if not used for 30 minutes - the old one has capital letters saying to unplug when not in use. This one has a more powerful heater. They nominally rate it at 60 watts, but it's not so simple. It starts cold at 100 watts (using a Kill-A-Watt meter) which drops to 17 when fully hot. It has thermal regulation so if you keep feeding glue sticks, the heater turns up to keep the action going. The low heat starts at 33 watts and drops to 9. Starting high gets it more quickly to working temperature. My old Surebonder starts at 60 watts cold instead of 100. So if you replace an old one with this “Ultra” version, you can have a much faster warm up and can work faster when you keep feeding sticks on a bigger job. It uses standard .45 glue sticks, so if you already have some, they will fit the Ultra.
