  • Lucky to have survived the car-wreck that killed her family. Lucky to get a single room because she wakes up screaming every night. And finally, lucky to be chosen to join a foster family at their remote country manor. But soon, Margot realises that it wasn't generosity that moved Mr. and Mrs. Sutton to bring her home. Margo was handpicked to be a companion for their daughter, Agatha - a formerly typical teenager who suddenly went catatonic. Staying with the Suttons is better than the alternatives, but strange things start happening at the estate. As Margot begins to understand the truth, she begins to slip away...just like Agatha.

Claustrophobic, creepy and haunting

Margot is the survivor of a devastating accident in which her entire family drowns in their car. She is taken in by the family of a lawyer, a former colleague of her dad's who owes her father his life. They live on an enormous, isolated family estate. She is asked to be a companion to their daughter, Agatha, a vivacious 16-year-old girl who has inexplicably become catatonic. Laura, Agatha's mother has very strict codes of behavior in general and in how Margot relates to Agatha. The house is remote and completely cut off from the outside world, no cell service, no wi-fi and a long way from the nearest town. Margot starts to sense that things are not as they seem. The author is very skillful in creating an unsettling, foreboding and claustrophobic atmosphere. The reader is on edge throughout. The Companion feels like classic gothic horror, although it is set in the present day. It's a perfect haunting, creepy thriller and I read it in two days.

Couldn't Put It Down

Margot, the main character is dealing with a huge tragedy, her entire family was in a car accident and died except for her. She gets put into a group home, and a couple weeks of staying there, a mysterious rich family wants to adopt her. They said they knew her dad and wanted to repay his kindness, so they take her under their wing. Margot finds out soon enough that these people werent just being kind, they needed her help in a way. Laura and Johns daughter had an accident and her brain doesnt work the way it should. She can do basic things such as feed herself, walk around, and go to the bathroom but thats about all she can. Laura wanted to have Margot come into the family and be Agathas companion. To sit with her and just basically watch her and make sure she is okay. Right away, things are just a little off at this mansion of a house. Laura will say things that are a little strange, and John is always away for work. Slowly, we get more and more little tidbits about what is really going on at this house. My heart was racing when I hit the last 100 pages or so and I could not believe what I was reading. The Companion is a seriously messed up book, but I loved every minute of it. I loved Margot and the storyline. Im not usually into a slower paced thriller, but this one was exceptionally written. It was so unnerving and freaky that I had to stop myself from reading and just breathe. I honestly hope this will be a huge hit in the horror/thriller department because it was perfection.

Addicting and easy to read!

The Companion by Katie Alender was the most bingeworthy book. This book had me hooked and reading until I was at the end sitting there, confused and disoriented from just how it good it was. Swipe for the synopsis! Im giving this book 4/5 stars. Our main character Margot is very strong and very spirited, however she is not the smartest. Her adopted parents Laura and John were pretty interesting. Barret was.. yeah lets not get into that quite yet. I loved the foreshadowing and the atmosphere of this book. The absolutely terror felt throughout the book was well executed, and the story was creative and very easy to follow, and binge read. I did not like our main love interest storyline. It was cute, but it felt weird to me, considering the context. I did enjoy it, but I felt it was.. weird. I also saw the ending coming 200 pages away from it, I do read a lot of thrillers, and watch a lot of horrors so I put 2 and 2 together from what Ive seen in the past. This book was very addicting, my spooky season is starting off brilliant. Im also at 86/100 books for my goodreads goal. It was originally 130 but I started the year off with a book slump. Im hoping to hit my original goal at this rate!
