Worked fine eventually

At first, the computer still showed 'No battery installed," and light flashing amber as though something was wrong. Not sure what fixed it: (1) waiting longer for it to charge (even though it said there was no battery), (2) taking the battery out and holding the power button down, (3) reseating the battery contacts several times. Eventually the computer recognized it as a genuine Dell battery with a serial number, and it worked fine.
