I was station preacher in Palestine, Texas, when volunteers were called for to defend the rights of the South against the aggressions of the North, and I volunteered. I could not afford to hide behind my profession, when the country called for defenders.
A company was made up by Capt. Pete Hardeman from four counties: Nacogdoches, Houston, Cherokee, and Anderson. Nearly all of them were very young men. We organized with Pete Hardiman as captain; John Aycock, first lieutenant; and Marsh Glenn, second lieutenant.
