Four bodies have turned up in a small city before the local police call in Dr. Martin Allison, a wealthy, slightly disabled psychologist who specializes in such cases of what he calls recreational killers or recks. Police Lieutenant Martinez leads the investigation, assisted by four sergeants including Kat Nguyen, an expert in computers assigned to work directly with Martin. He says the first step is to locate the earlier victims, especially the all-important victim Zero; the second is to identify the common factor among the diverse victims that causes Reck to select them. Inevitably, more bodies accumulate as the investigation grinds on. As Martin predicted, Reck, or 'Mark V' as he calls himself, phones to gloat over his mysterious project which is beyond anyone else's understanding, taunting the police with their impotence against him. Spurred on by Martin's calculated dismissal of his accomplishments, Mark strikes closer and closer to home. Martin begins to unravel Mark's scheme which has tentacles reaching throughout the city, the whole country, and even extends world-wide. Martin's persistence and Mark's arrogance inevitably lead to a confrontation and the revelation of all secrets.
