❥Gauze sponges used as washclothes, Interesting!
My surgeon friend tells me that these are what are known as "sponges," which are basically soft absorbent cotton gauze pads that are used during surgeries to pack into the cavity to soak up blood and fluids, and then removed before the surgeon closes. They count them as they go in and count them as they are removed. The little loop at the end shows up on an X-ray, in case any get left behind and are missed during the count. So, she was kind of astonished that they are sold as baby washclothes! But they work fine for that purpose, only we are not expecting them to be durable and hold up to washing. We'll see! They are, however, very, very soft and absorbent!
