Princess Claire grabbed the hand of her new friend, Ninian, and rushed to the castle door. Audience hours with the King were over, but Claire understood that Ninian needed help right away. Ninian explained to the King that his father was sick, and their cow ate his neighbor's corn when the fence blew down. Now the neighbor wouldn't give the cow back, which meant they didn't have milk, cheese or butter to sell or money to buy medicine.
