Butterbur is a shrub-like plant that has naturally large leaves, and purple-pink flowers. It can be found growing in wet, marshy ground in Europe and northern Asia, where it is native.

However, its name is derived from its early use: the large leaves of the plant were used to wrap butter and keep it fresh during warm weather.
