Common Uses: Patchouli is recognized by aromatherapists as being effective for combating nervous disorders, helping with dandruff, sores, skin irritations and acne. In the perfumery industry, it is interesting to note that Patchouli improves with age, and that the aged product is what is preferred over freshly harvested. In aromatherapy, Patchouli is an excellent fixative that can help extend other, more expensive oils.

Properties: Antibacterial, antiemetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antiphlogistic, antiseptic, antiviral, bactericidal, carminative, decongestant, deodorant, febrifuge, laxative, nervine, stimulant, stomachic, tonic.

Benefits: Burns, constipation, dandruff, dry skin, indigestion, infections, insect repellant and bites, nervous exhaustion and stress related conditions, oily hair and skin, open pores, uterine tonic, wounds, wrinkles. Patchouli may be added to skin and hair care products. It is considered a fixative in perfumery.

History: Before it became popular in Europe, Indian shawls and Indian ink were identified by the unique patchouli odor.

Shelf Life and Storage from the time of distillation:

Approximately 6 – 8 years.

It is impossible to say exactly what an essential oil shelf life will be. The storage conditions will vary and make a significant difference. If the essential oil has been received directly from the distiller shortly after distillation and the glass bottle is kept dark, full, closed, and cool, we can make some generalizations.

Note that if an essential oil begins to appear cloudy, thicker, or if it smells more acidic, it has likely begun to oxidize.
