This allows a more coarse straining before fine straining, which helps the fluid pass through the strainer more quickly on the fine straining and less clogging. Pouring directly into a fine strainer often results in rapid clogging when the fluid is dirty.Cleaning these strainers is fairly simple. The nylon mesh cleans very easily. It can be scraped clean or washed clean with a garden hose/light pressure washer or using soapy water. These strainers are made to last through several washes/strainings and is why they are superior to filter bags in initial filtering of fuels.Choose the micron size that filters out the particle sizes that you need removed.
