An Inexpensive Upgrade to Serious Stopping Power In the 60’s and early 70’s, drum brakes were generally considered to be just fine for safely halting a muscle car in traffic. Disc brakes were a luxurious, extra-cost option that often only ended up under performance packages like the Super Sport or Z/28. But as time has marched on, we’ve grown accustomed to our late models with electronically assisted disc brakes on all four corners that will stop on a dime. Meanwhile, a trip across town in that old drum brake equipped Chevelle, Nova, or Camaro is an exercise in constant vigilance and planning ahead for a panic stop. It’s almost enough to take the fun out of the drive.  It doesn’t take much to drastically improve on the 19th century design of those drum brakes, especially in the front. A simple, inexpensive front disc brake upgrade using OE-style components can make a night and day difference when compared to those old, fading drums. That’s where this kit fits in. Complete Kit Including Disc Brake Spindles  Finding the right spindle to swap your GM car to disc brakes can be tricky. Original drum brake spindles require that the upper threaded boss not only have over a half inch machined from it, but the hole also typically has to be drilled and tapped deeper. It’s hard to get this right, and on top of that, non-Chevy A bodies like Cutlass, GTO, and Skylark often have different sized holes in the spindles, which further complicates the swap. The OEM-style disc brake spindles that are included in this kit take all the machine work and guess work out of the equation. They’re designed to work with this kit and your 1964-72 GM A-Body, 1967-69 GM F-Body and 1968-74 X-Body, making the conversion a true bolt-on. These are stock height spindles, so they won’t change the look or handling of your car.  In addition to the spindles, this brake kit comes complete with everything needed to complete the install. That means bearings, seals, brackets, hardware, 11” rotors with 5 on 4-3/4” bolt pattern, ’69-’77 GM calipers, pads, and hoses are all included, saving you all the trips to the parts store to hunt down the nickel and dime parts that can make an install like this a hassle.  Application and Install Notes This kit fits 1964-72 GM A-Body, 1967-69 GM F-Body and 1968-74 X-Body using the included stock height spindles. If you’re after a dropped stance and improved handling, we recommend using our Speedway Motors G-Comp spindles and this brake kit without the stock spindles, part # 910-31958 or 910-31958D for drilled and slotted rotors.  We also recommend using our brake booster/master cylinder combo, part # 910-31978 with this front disc brake kit. Stock single reservoir 4-wheel drum brake master cylinders don’t have the capacity to supply the proper amount of pressure for front disc brakes. This master and booster kit also includes an adjustable proportioning valve to offer adjustment of the rear line pressure, allowing you to balance the front and rear brakes.  Also note that this kit will NOT work with 14” diameter wheels
