Pennington Tall Fescue Blend is great - But it takes effort

I have used the Pennington Tall Fescue Blend for 7 years now. At first in a small area of my side yard under an ornamental pear tree where there is abundant shade. It has done really well there, but it took 5 separate applications over several years for it to be thick and look good. Just a little more rain than desired at the wrong time will wash away the seed or make it grow in patchy. You have to have perfect conditions for about 3 weeks for it to take hold. I cut my backyard trees back to generate more sunshine ( I have two trees that had grown together) and then I seeded the Pennington Tall Fescue Blend there as well. Probably about 900 sq. feet worth. It has taken 4 rounds of seeding over a year and a half and it now looks great. I made custom plastic tarps to protect the grass seed from rains and that worked really well. Because, as I mentioned above, just a quarter inch of rain will wash away enough seed to make the exercise a failure or create patchy areas where the water ran off and took the seed with it. This Tall Fescue only grows by seed. The grass doesn't spread. I have 2 Labs and a cavalier and I have to spray down their potty areas 3 times a day and I use Dog Rocks as well. My fescue looks as good as it can with all my circumstances. I will say that you will have better luck planting the seed in the fall than in the spring. In the fall the seed has all winter to grow into thicker blades, but in the spring it starts getting warm too quick and the grass doesn't have enough time to mature before some of it dies off. Now, I'm in the Dallas - Fort Worth area and so I'm at the edge of the zone where this grass really does good, so I'm probably pushing it. But, even with all the extensive efforts and constant watering, I'm happy and grateful for the grass I have been able to grow because bermuda and St. Augustine won't grow in that much shade and this tall fescue will. Just know that this grass seed is not cheap. It's more than it should b
