Fleeing the Bolshevik Revolution, his family settled in Estonia and Grinsson studied art in the Estonian city of Tartu. Moving to Berlin in 1929, he initially harboured acting ambitions, before redirecting his energies into designing film posters for the UFA film studio. In 1933, Grinsson was forced to flee Germany for France after drawing an anti-Nazi election poster that depicted a caricature of Hitler as the Angel of Death. Settling in France, Grinsson continued to pursue film poster design. Post-war, he became one of the major names working in Paris, alongside contemporaries René Péron and Roger Soubie. At this time, Grinsson would often design the alternative 'style B' poster, while another artist, like Péron or Soubie, would design the main poster for a film's release. In 1947, Grinsson helped to establish a union of film poster designers. The commissions kept coming and he became one of the most sought-after talents in the business. From the 1930s to 1972 (when he retired from the increasingly photographic profession), Grinsson produced some 1800 posters across a variety of genres. His most notable works include This Gun For Hire (1942), Gilda (1946), The Lady from Shanghai (1948)
