A Movie Worth Seeing

This movie depicts the actual experiences of Mary Ingles, an expectant mother, and two members of her family, who were captured by Shawnee Indians in the early 1700's in Virginia. Although forced to live in an Indian village, Mary's courage, intelligence and strength allow her to survive through many difficulties and become accepted by the Indian tribe. This is a story of overcoming obstacles and not giving up when you are struggling to achieve a goal. Mary decides to leave her children in the village, because her infant daughter is nursed by an Indian woman and her son has been adopted by the Indian chief. She attempts to return to her husband and home by following the river through dense forest. Viewing this film will increase the understanding of children and teens regarding the way Shawnee Indians, French trappers and English settlers lived during the historical period of the French and Indian War. There is a happy ending to this true story. The chief returns the children to Mary and her husband, due to his respect for her strength and character. Although the story includes an Indian massacre, birth of a baby when on the trail, and discussion about breastfeeding, these elements are handled well. I would not have any reservation about showing the film to children 8 years and older. Parental guidance will be needed. Viewing this movie encourages the viewer to read the book.

This is an excellent movie. I actually read the reviews of others advising the same. Glad I purchased. It is a heart-touching family movie.
