It was only recently phased out, with the introduction of the ECWCS layering system. The M-65 had a number of improvements over the existing field jacktes. Among these improvements were the built-n stowa-away hood which zips into the collar, extra pockets, shoulder epaulets. The closure buttons were also replaced with a brass zipper, to allow soldiers to open and close their jackets more quickly and easily. The detachable liner was included to allow dealing with fluctuating teperatures easily.
