I love that Walmart offers these scapulars because they are hard to find. They also have the added medals. This devotion is an important traditional Catholic devotion that I try to share with anyone I find and they remember it usually from childhood but do not know where to find them. I encourage everyone drawn to this to get these scapulars and wear them.
Significance: It is not a "good-luck charm" or magic amulet, but a sign of devotion, consecrated life, and a reminder of the need for prayer and the sacraments.
Origin: According to tradition, the Blessed Virgin Mary gave the scapular to Saint Simon Stock, a Carmelite, in 1251, promising that anyone who dies wearing it would not suffer eternal fire.
Structure: It consists of two small pieces of brown wool connected by strings, worn over the shoulders (one square on the chest, one on the back).
Enrollment: A priest must formally enroll individuals in the scapular (often called the "Scapular of Mount Carmel").
Commitment: The wearer is encouraged to live a life consistent with the Gospel, and there are various prayers or spiritual works sometimes associated with it, such as daily recitation of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin.
