He worked for all the major studios and was an immense talent. In 1955, he received the Italian Spiga Cambelloti prize as best cinematographic painter of the year. His design for The Ipcress File is indicative of his style, which favoured one large dominating portrait in place of more traditional scene-based imagery. Cesselon also had an instinctive ability to capture the spirit or theme of a movie in a single image, as is demonstrated by his overriding use of the glasses image, reflecting the blurry and confused ability of Harry Palmer to see clearly.
